Welcome to 8 Blue Social Studies!

This year is going to be an exciting learning opportunity for all of us, and it is my goal to create a safe and interesting educational environment designed to challenge and stimulate the mind of every student.

For those who do not know me, I’d like to offer some background information. This year begins my 18th of teaching in the middle school. I moved to Delaware in 2003 from Georgia, where I enjoyed 10 years in middle school. Additionally, I have the honor of being a Fulbright Scholar and member of the American Board of Certified Teachers of Excellence. My career, and every subset of it, is my passion. I am a perpetual student, and strive to instill those values in my students by engaging them in their own learning.

On a personal level, I enjoy reading, writing, watching movies, listening to music, traveling, and spending time with my family. I often use personal anecdotes in class to connect the curriculum to the students’ lives and encourage them to do the same. It is essential for the students on the Blue Team to understand and have mutual respect for each other so that strong cooperative bonds can be established, thus creating a community of learners and teachers.

I encourage you to take part in your child’s learning process by speaking with him/her daily about what we are learning in social studies. Class begins promptly at 7:20am. Please make every effort to have your child in place on time to avoid checking in with the office and missing instruction. On late days and days of absence, an excuse note will be required from the parent. Additionally, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may encounter throughout the year. Email is often an easy way to communicate. You can contact me by clicking the "Contact" link below, or you may find it more convenient to phone the school at (302) 378-5001 and leave a voice mail. I have limited time to meet with you during the day, but am happy to work something out or meet with you before and after school to discuss school issues.

Regards,

Ashlyn Duncan

P.S. I will always post daily homework and news by 6:00pm, so check often for updates. Additionally, when I can, I will also provide online copies of the work we are doing in class so that excuses like "I left it at school" can be avoided.
