School Board Elections Coming Up

Filing Deadline: March 5, 2010
Elections: May 22, 2010

Each year, one ASD member completes his or her five-year term on the Board of Education and that position becomes eligible for re-election. This year, it is the at-large seat currently held by Mrs. Julie Johnson.
 
Interested parties are encouraged to file by the March 5, 2010 closing deadline. Information and a brief job description appears below. Please be sure to pass this information on to friends and family.
 
Eligibility:
  • District residents who are 18 or older, a U.S. citizen, and eligible to vote, can request a filing packet from the Department of Elections for New Castle County at (302)577-3464 or obtain one online at http://www.state.de.us/doe_ncc
  • Notarized forms must be received by the Department of Elections no later than 4:30 p.m. on March 5.
Voting:
  • Elections will occur on Tuesday, May 11.
  • Polls will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the following locations: Alfred G. Waters Middle, Appoquinimink Training Center, Bunker Hill Elementary, Everett Meredith Middle, Middletown High, Olive B. Loss Elementary, Townsend Early Childhood Center.
Role of the Board:
  • The Board of Education serves as a trustee for Appoquinimink Schools. Board members represent the views of the community in matters affecting education.
  • They set policy, approve educational goals and curriculum changes, and act on recommendations of the Superintendent of Schools.
  • The Board has fiscal responsibility for approving the annual budget and maintaining a balanced budget at the end of the year.

  • Influencing the lives of young people who are the future of our community, state and nation.
  • Interacting with caring, committed faculty and administrators.
  • Working hand in hand with community leaders and educational stakeholders to create world-class schools.
Time Commitment:
  • Board members meet monthly and participate regularly in workshops and training.
  • In addition to meetings, Board volunteers are active in recognition programs, special events and advocacy efforts.
  • The term of service is five years (July 2010-June 2015) with an option to run for re-election.
  • This is an unpaid, volunteer position.
